Surviving R. Kelly
This stuff had me messed up. It’s seriously nothing that I didn’t grow up knowing. He was this creepy ass musician who liked little girls. However seeing everything laid out like that and seeing their faces and hearing their experiences just did a number on me. It’s easy to separate yourself from an article you read. It’s harder to do it when you see the person and you can tell that they are still hurting and blaming themselves for what their abuser did to them. None of this is their fault.
I hate that everyone is blaming the victims instead of putting the blame at the feet of the abuser where it rightfully belongs. He’s been getting away with this mess since Aaliyah and that’s been what...20 odd years? How isn’t he under s prison already? Are people so attached to his music that they refuse to see that the person who created it is disgusting and harming Black girls?
The last girl they showed, Azriel. I had a nightmare about her. Her face, like she just got to me. She reminded me of someone I know and she’s someone’s daughter. I’ve seen dialogue on twitter and Facebook blaming her family and yeah, they were mad stupid for thinking that his behavior would be any different with their kid. They should’ve never put her in that position. However that doesn’t negate that their baby is missing and that their is a gaping whole in their hearts and a worry that can’t be eased because they don’t know if she’s okay.
This documentary/eye opening series goes to show that the world really doesn’t(hasn’t ever) cared about the bodies of Black girls/women. This is why he’s continued to get away with this predatory behavior with no consequence.
Side Note: I don't recommend watching this unless you have adequate support systems in place.
